HISTORY OF WALL CLOCKS

A wall clock is a basic device used by everyone. Most of us have at least one at home, a few of them at work and we see them in many public places. We use the clock to see time, to know if we are running late or to schedule a day. Actually, one of the main reasons why people needed clocks in the past was to regulate religious prayers. However, wall clocks became much more important with the invention of train lines.

Let’s go through a few basic historic facts…

The first tries to create a clock resulted in the various inventions of sun, water or sand clocks. Even though people were able to find out an approximate time, these solutions were not very reliable and accurate. The need for great working clocks pushed people to try more and more different mechanisms. As a result, they created the first models of mechanical clocks in England (1386) and France (1389). Unfortunately, the problem of these clocks was their weak power sources – weights. 

The next big step in the development of clocks happened more than 500 years ago. German, Petr Heinlein, came up with the first modern mechanical clocks. Finally, the mechanism became closer to the clock as we know them today.  Some of you maybe still remember pendulum invented by Galileo.

Since the 17th century people focused more on wall clocks design. To own a wall clock was a sign of great prestige. On the one hand, this prestigious interior accessory was available in many design variations. On the other hand it kept the similar mechanism till the 19th century. Here finally comes a new invented mechanism - Quartz clock. You probably heard about it as it’s known as the most popular clocks of all times.

With Quartz, wall clocks became much more affordable and spread out between people. It became part of every household in various designs and brands. Today, you can buy wall clocks in every colour, size, price range and design.
